Potassium Nitrate is an ionic salt of K++ which is used as an oxidizer in black powder, as food preservative with E number E252, and in fireworks as well. It has molecular formula KNO3 with molar mass of 101.103 g/mol and melting point of 334 degrees Celsius. This compound is suitable to be used in formulation of fertilizers as good source of nitrogen and potassium. It is also known to have application in pharmaceutical & cosmetic industries for adding in toothpaste for sensitive teeth, treatment of asthma, and for high blood pressure conditions. Potassium Nitrate also serves as thickening agent in soups and stews.
